This is the start of our FAQ sheet for the EZ Reader, distributed by Astak in the Americas. The EZ Reader is a Hanlin V3 made by Jinke of China. It has eight years of research behind it and additional models will be coming out as Jinke and Astak work together to improve the line with innovations.
The EZ Reader is a reliable, quality ebook-reading device. If you run into any problems (such as it seems like it will not take a command) please try the following before contacting technical support:
1. Like all electronic devices with a rechargeable battery, plenty of power is essential. If the unit does have any problems, first plug it in overnight to ensure that the battery is fully charged. Please use the included power adaptor, and not charge using a USB cable. Please do not go only by the power icon on the device. All such gauges are only meant as a general guide. Recharge fully overnight as a first step. Most problems seem to just go away with a full charge.
2. There is a reset button just above the battery door on the back side of the device. It is a tiny hole about the diameter of a paper clip. Use a paper clip end and push GENTLY into this hole for about 2 seconds, and the device should then automatically shut down and then restart. You should not lose any data when doing this “soft reset”. Now check to see if your problem has disappeared.
3. If steps 1 and 2 above did not help, open the battery door (with the included screw driver). Remove the battery and then wait ten seconds before putting the battery back into place. Close the battery door by gently tightening the screw. Restart the EZ Reader manually. You should not lose any data during this process. Now check to see if your problem has disappeared.
If none of the above solves the problem, please call Astak technical support toll-free at: 866-368-8788. We have many product lines, so please specifically ask for “EZ Reader Technical Support”. Remember, we want very much to keep you pleased with your product. Please be patient and give us a chance to make things right. Your warranty is for one full year, parts and labor only. Please have your receipt nearby when you call.
Q: How do I transfer ebooks or music files to the EZ Reader?
A: Please go through the following steps if your files are already saved on your computer:
1. Connect the EZ Reader to your Mac or PC computer with a USB cable (USB cable is provided in the box). Once connected, your computer will show a memory stick icon in the taskbar of the desktop, just like any other USB memory stick.
2. Go to “My Computer” and find the “Removable Disk” where you can view the contents of your EZ Reader. Then simply copy & paste all the files from your computer to the EZ Reader.
3. After transferring the files, disconnect the EZ Reader from your computer, and the EZ Reader will automatically recognize the files you just transferred into it. Now you can enjoy your reading or music on the EZ Reader.
Q: How do I add additional fonts onto my EZ Reader?
A: To add fonts to the Font Library on your EZ Reader, the font must be a True Font and will only work with Microsoft WORD and TEXT files (.doc and .txt).
1. Find a website where you can download free fonts. One is: http://www.1001freefonts.com
2. After you download the chosen fonts, insert an SD Card into your EZ Reader and connect to your computer via the USB cable.
3. Go to “My Computer” and find the “Removable Disk” where you can view the contents of your SD Card.
4. Under the “File” dropdown menu, select “New > Folder”.
5. Create a new folder and name it “fonts”. This is important and please be exact in the spelling. Do not name the folder anything else, simply “fonts”. Now this folder will be in your SD Card’s root directory.
6. Copy your chosen font(s) from your computer to the “fonts” folder on the SD Card.
7. Disconnect USB cable.
8. Turn on your EZ Reader if it isn’t already on. Go to the Main Menu of your internal memory (not the SD card main menu). Press the “OK” button to bring up a pop-up menu on the bottom left of your EZ Reader screen.
9. Press #6 for Settings.
10. Then press #3 “Replace font” which will bring you to the Font Replacement Interface.
11. Select the font you just added. Then press OK to finish. Now, you can read text files and Microsoft Word documents (.txt, .doc) in your newly chosen font!
12. If you want to go back to the default font, simply go back to the Replace Font option under Settings and choose the default font. Or refer to your User Manual.
Q: What is the warranty policy for the EZ Reader?
A: We offer a one year parts and labor warranty if the EZ Reader has a malfunction. You are responsible for shipping and insurance fees. If you would like to send your device to us, please first contact us for a RMA number via email at support@astak.com and obtain a confirmation that you can send the EZ Reader back to us. We will then either repair the EZ Reader or replace it.
NOTE: Please save your music and eBook files on your computer before sending the EZ Reader back to us for repair. We will not be responsible for lost files.
Q: Can I read an eBook and listen to MP3 at the same time?
A: Yes. Simply open a music file first, then choose a ebook you want to read and the music will play while you enjoy your reading. You can control the volume with the little silver buttons on the right side of the EZ Reader.
Q: How are images and pictures displayed on the EZ Reader (Hanlin V3)?
A: The EZ Reader uses a four-level greyscale, which means that pictures will be displayed in four shades of grey. They are displayed very crisply, and Contrast and Brightness can be adjusted.
Q: Does the EZ Reader have a color screen?
A: No, the EZ Reader uses E-ink and E-paper technology that does not strain the eyes, which means that the ‘ink’ is black and the ‘paper’ is a light shade of grey, just like a normal book. Color display is not possible yet because color requires a backlight. However, an advantage of the E-ink and E-paper technology is that you can read 8,000 pages of text on a single charge.
Q: How can I increase the font size on the EZ Reader?
A: Your EZ Reader has a three-size font increase function. This means you can double the original font size twice. Simply press the #8 button to increase the font size. Press it again for maximum font size. Press again and it goes back to the original size.
Q: Is the EZ Reader compatible with Windows Vista, Mac, etc?
A: The EZ Reader uses a regular USB connection. It is compatible with all Microsoft Windows versions, including Vista, and with Macs.
Q: How do I bookmark?
A: Your EZ Reader in most instances will automatically bookmark the last page you were reading when you closed that book, so that when you return to the book you will be on the page where you stopped reading. Otherwise, when you have opened a file, you can press the #6 key to bookmark a page, or press the number of an existing bookmark to remove the old bookmark. There will be small bookmark icon(s) on the bottom left of the screen labeled 1, 2, 3, etc. to show you how many bookmarks you have for that file. Please refer to your User Manual for more detailed info on this topic.
Q: How do I switch between the EZ Reader’s internal memory and the SD memory?
A: If an SD card is already inserted into the EZ Reader, the device will automatically display the contents of the SD card when you turn on your EZ Reader. To view the files stored on the internal memory, just go to the main menu, push the OK button, and a popup-menu will appear. Choose #5 for “Built-in storage” and it will display all the contents of the internal memory. Press “OK” then “5” to go back to the SD card memory.
Or if you simply remove the SD card, the screen will automatically display the contents of the internal memory.
If you are unsure which memory screen you are looking at, check the upper left corner of your screen. If there is a small “SD” image there, then you are looking at the contents of your SD card. If there is a small “NF” symbol there, then you are looking at the contents on the internal memory of your EZ Reader.
Q: How can I charge the built-in battery?
A: There are two methods.
1) You can use the AC Power adapter that comes with the EZ Reader (normal charging time is 5-7 hours). This is the fastest and best way to charge your device.
2. Or you can use the included USB cable to connect EZ Reader with your laptop or desktop computer. The device will display a message that says “To charge battery, press any other key”. So press any key except the “OK” key and your EZ Reader will start charging. Your battery icon on the bottom right corner of the screen will change to show a battery symbol with a lightning bolt in it. If you do not see the lightning bolt, then it is NOT charging.
Q: About the battery charge indicator
A: The first few times that the EZ Reader is used, the battery charge indicator displays a higher charge than it really has left. It takes a few full recharges before the battery indicator really learns to read accurately. So for the first few times of charging, please recharge when the charge icon indicates that the battery is half full, or recharge when the device starts to respond sluggishly.
Q: My device does not seem to be charging! Help!
A: You must put the battery into the EZ Reader before you can charge the device. The battery that comes with the EZ Reader in the box is NOT a spare battery. The battery cover is on the back of the device, and one screw allows easy installation or replacement of the battery. It is a Nokia BL4C battery that is easily available online if you ever need to replace it.
Many of our competitors require the users to send their ebook readers to the factory for battery replacements. The EZ Reader makes it easy to replace the battery by yourself! For added convenience, you can even carry a spare battery when travelling to extend your usage time without recharging.
Q: Which SD cards can I use?
A: Your EZ Reader is compatible with SD cards up to 4 GB in size. Any brand of SD card will work as long as it is 4GB or smaller.
Q: Is the SD slot SDHC compatible?
A: No, not yet. But EZ Reader also has 512 MB of internal memory and supports SD cards up to 4 GB.
Q: How do I use the memory of an SD card? How do I put files onto it?
A: Please go through the following steps:
1. Insert the SD card (up to 4GB) into the slot on the top of the EZ Reader.
2. Connect the EZ Reader to your computer with the USB cable, and then press the OK button to connect.
3. Your computer should now recognize the EZ Reader’s internal memory as a removable drive, and also recognize the SD card as another removable drive.
4. You can now open the SD card drive and transfer files into it by copying and pasting from your computer.
Q: How do I turn up the volume of audio books without stopping my reading?
A: You can do this by using the two silver-colored volume buttons on the right side of the EZ Reader. Sings music is recorded at varying volumes, this is a handy feature.
Q: Does EZ Reader play audio books?
A: Yes, the EZ Reader also plays audio books. You can download many audio books online for free, by clicking the “Free eBooks” icon on the www.mobiebook.com website.
Q: Do I have an equalizer on my EZ Reader?
A: Yes. When you open any music file, it will bring up the “Music Zone” interface. The “8” button will switch you through numerous equalization modes including: normal, classical, jazz, and rock. This is a feature unique to the EZ Reader.
Q: I cannot bring up the Music Zone or open music files. What should I do?
A: You MUST first plug in a pair of headphones or ear buds before the Music Zone interface will open. If you try to choose a song without any headphones plugged in, a notice will come up on the bottom of your screen as a reminder to plug in earphones. Your EZ Reader has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack.
Q: Can my EZ Reader support a good quality, or Noise Canceling Headset?
A: Sure. You can use noise-canceling headphones and notice the quality.
Q: It takes a long time to go from first page in a menu to the last page. Is there a faster way to “flip” through the pages of an ebook?
A: Hold down the page advance button for 3~5 seconds. You will advance 10 pages at a time instead of one page at a time. You can also use the “Go To Page…” function to access a specific page – just press the “OK” button, and then press the “3” button to access this function.
Q: I love my EZ Reader and want to care for it! How can I best do this?
A: Keep it dry at all times. Clean the screen GENTLY without any Windex. Use a soft, lint free cloth. A good eyeglass cleaner on the screen is ok, but only a little bit. You can use a can of Electronics Duster, such as “Blow Off”, and clean around the buttons.
Q: What about languages? Is English the only language on the EZ Reader?
A. Your EZ Reader supports most major languages. When you first turn on the EZ Reader, press the “OK” button and a popup menu appears. Press button #6 for Settings. Then press #2 for Languages. Then simply choose the language you want to read in. Make sure you are in the built-in memory when you do this and not on your SD card menu.
Q: I downloaded a firmware upgrade but how do I install it?
A: After downloading the upgrade, you must first unzip the file. After unzipping, put the ".bin" file on your SD card. Turn off your EZ Reader, then insert the SD card into your EZ Reader. Turn on your EZ Reader, and at the same time, hold down the silver "volume up" button on the right side of the EZ Reader while it turns on. If you have any problems doing this, feel free to call us and ask for EZ Reader tech support.
Q: How do I find my PID number?
A: Go to the main screen / main bookshelf (the screen you should see when you first turn on your EZ Reader). Press OK button to get a popup menu. Choose number 6 for Settings. Then choose number 4 for About option. At the bottom of that page, you should see your PID listed.
Q: I downloaded a firmware upgrade but how do I install it?
A:
1. After downloading the upgrade, you must first unzip the file.
2. After unzipping, put the ".bin" file on your SD card. Your SD card must be 4GB or smaller in size to do this.
3. Turn off your EZ Reader, and then insert the SD card into your EZ Reader.
4. Then, first holding down the silver "volume up" button on the right side of the EZ Reader, then press the ON button to turn on your EZ Reader.
5. Keep pressing the buttons until you hear a beep-beep sound.
6. The screen will display a message to ask if you want to update firmware, so press the OK button to confirm, and you’re done.
If you have any problems doing this, feel free to call us and ask for EZ Reader tech support. If it doesn’t work the first few tries, you might need to reformat your SD card, but please save your files on your computer first because reformatting will erase the files on your SD card.
